While I am happy to see such a memorial, one that will remind us of the Holocaust and the genocide that took place, I can see why the atheists opposed the Star of David on state property.  Personally, I have no problem with it, but I can understand why they see it as "exclusionary" knowing that many people other than Jews suffered and died as a result of this atrocity.  As a Christian and strong supporter of Israel and the Jewish people, I honor and respect this emblem; however, it could have been left out this time, simply honoring all groups, all faiths, who gave their lives as they participated in this liberation without singling out the Jewish people.  Otherwise, there would be a string of emblems on that memorial.

The Holocaust should serve as a reminder to all of us that hatred and a desire to destroy others is wrong.  Let us also remember that Hitler did this in the name of religion, claiming that this ethnic cleansing was good and right.  There are groups today who are saying the same thing about Christians, and they are actually living among us.  The America I once knew has changed vastly as other religions and ways of thinking have risen to prominence, making it more difficult to promote the very Christian values on which our country was founded.  Fifty years ago we would not be having this discussion, but unfortunately, we (myself included) have let this slip away, making me realize that if we had been living out the true Christian life, not with mere  religious symbols hanging around our necks or erected on state house lawns,  but with the faithfulness and love of Christ put into action,  America would be a far different kind of country today.
And so, we have boxed ourselves into a corner as other groups have emerged, ones who could soon demand their own religious symbols be displayed.  Unless something changes, I see more conflict ahead as others "demand their rights," which leads me to say what I thought I would never say-----a society of separation of church and state---symbols included--- is on the way.
