This treaty like most others that are passed through the UN will have no respect and no enforcement mechanism. The sad part of the scenario is that the treaty will pass and the US will most likely vote for the Treaty in Assembly. This is shameful. Especially so since there is no "right to self defense" contained within this Treaty.
The US pays approximately 27% of all UN expenses. We pay more than all the other permanent members of the Security Council combined. In 2010 alone, we gave the UN $7.7 Billion, 13 times more than Russia and 7 times more than China. Why should we foot the bill for an organization that is fighting against the best interests of our country?
The Arms Trade Treaty is just another incident of the UN taking advantage of the US. Why should we agree to treaties that will hamper our interest when the bad guys are never going to abide by the treaties that they make? It's ridiculous to negotiate in good faith with people who are never going to honor the agreement.
When we are cutting budgets at home, it makes no sense to be funding an organization and its affiliates who are not acting through good faith and do not have our best interests in mind.
