It would seem that students need to become more knowledgeable regarding their constitutional rights regarding freedom of expression and speech. This new found knowledge of their constitutional rights may have an impact on the kinds of guidelines that the school sets into stone. Parents as well need to get involved in school policy manuals with the focus of defending their children's rights of expression and freedom of speech and actions. On another note, it would be good for students to think of what they would do under these situations. Should they call the police to pick up the friend, or a taxi, or another friend to help. This would still be helping save the friend's life and yet the athlete could keep the rules that they agreed to at the start of the season. Where were this drunk student's parents? When they were available, we provided our teens with phone cards so they could always call home or another adult and they usually had credit cards so they could get a taxi if needed. Discipline could take place when they were once again safe.
