If the United States is to take any action in Syria it must be done with the consent of Congress. Article 1 of the Constitution grants the power to declare war to the legislative branch. If history has taught us anything, it is that if we are to get involved militarily in any conflict the full support of the American people must be behind such a decision. We must have a clear plan and clear exit strategy. The president has made too many decisions unilaterally and which fall outside the executive branch’s constitutionally enumerated powers. Any American involvement in the conflict in Syria would most certainly antagonize Russia, China, and Iran, which could escalate this into a global war. Diplomacy is key in this situation as we do not want to take any action which would help the spread of radical Islam in the Middle East. Our record is not good as we see the instability our involvement has brought to the region.
