We already have background checks in place for firearms purchases. A dealer in Florida is required to do a background check on everyone who purchases a firearm. If the purchaser has a concealed carry permit, it is immediate and they can take their purchase with them after clearing the background check. If they do not, there is a three day waiting period. I believe this proposal would extend them to sales from individual to individual. As a responsible firearms owner if I sold a firearm to an individual I would go through a dealer to have a background check done on the individual for my own protection and assurance. However, if this extends to requiring background checks for a father passing a firearm to a relative or acquisition through an inheritance or estate for example, I believe this has exceeded what could be considered reasonable. The second amendment states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” All of the existing and proposed bills can be considered infringements on those rights, and we must keep this in mind when this goes to a vote. There are already enough laws on the books which, if properly enforced, prohibit anyone from owning or possessing a firearm if they are not law abiding citizens or have mental illness problems. I would prefer these laws be better enforced and anyone caught violating the law receive maximum sentences and harsh penalties. Criminals will not obey gun control laws not matter how restrictive they become. Let’s not make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to own firearms in an attempt to curtail gun violence incidents by those who have violated the law.
