There appears to be much finger-pointing going on. The Assad regime reporting the rebels used chemical weapons and the rebels stating it was the Assad regime.
Given the US pretext for going into Iraq- Saddam's weapons of mass destruction and the evidence from the international community for going into Iraq- I think it would be wise to do more investigating into the situation, which might include monitoring equipment to determine use of such weapons. Over the past few months it has been rumored that there are those in the Regime who would be willing to use chemical weapons to put down the rebels.
Given the continued escalation of this civil war, and Assad's brutal suppression and killing of his own people, however, it would come as no surprise that he would use chemical weapons to squash further dissent, sending a "message" to his people.
