Yes, I agree that these cameras violate individual rights? First, the crime is attached to the vehicle and to the vehicle’s owner rather than to the criminal. What if the vehicle is stolen? Second, the cameras are invasive just as much as if they had cameras on my home. In Texas, one’s vehicle is considered one’s property just as one’s home is. Example: Under our Concealed Handgun License law, one can have a gun in one’s car without having to have a license, just as one can legally have a gun in one’s home without a license. Third, the real reason behind these cameras is not safety or catching law breakers. That is a sideline. The real purpose is money! This becomes an automated system run by companies from anywhere. Here is Texas we fought and won the battle over red light cameras. Fourth, in Texas the violations and the resultant tickets were not enforceable under current state law. Therefore, if you did get the ticket through the mail, you didn’t have to pay it because there was no law to back it up. People did not know this and the City of Houston coffers filled up as people paid the unenforceable fines.
Bottom line: We cannot afford to trade security or safety for loss of freedom.
