I am very conflicted on this issue, perhaps because the White House declines to discuss the parameters they use to determine who they consider a terrorist operative to be placed on this “kill list.” I understand the necessity to eliminate those who plot to commit terrorist acts against our country and its citizens. I worry that targeting an American citizen for a drone strike without due process is unconstitutional and violates the rule of law. I am also concerned about the innocents who are killed in these strikes. I do not believe that the White House has the constitutional authority to act unilaterally to order these strikes. According to the Daily Mail, “A bipartisan group of 11 senators wrote a letter to Obama on Monday asking his administration to provide its legal justification for its use of drone strikes over the past four years. ‘We ask that you direct the Justice Department to provide Congress, specifically the Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, with any and all legal opinions that lay out the executive branch's official understanding of the President's authority to deliberately kill American citizens,’ the senators led by Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon wrote in their letter.” This is the 12th such request made by Congress to the White House.
