Today’s young women have been convinced that the Roe v Wade decision was the greatest achievement in advancing women’s rights, and we must help them understand that this is actually doing more harm than good. The government sees them only as their reproductive parts, as was made obvious during this last election. Between the Life of Julia video, which showed how government takes care of women from cradle to grave, to Georgetown University Law School Student Sandra Fluke demanding that free birth control is her right, women’s rights and the status of women has hit a new low. With all of the medical advances and inexpensive birth control options, do they truly believe that the government should be involved in their private lives in this way? It is very easy today to avoid an unwanted pregnancy if one takes personal responsibility for ones actions. It is also important to convince them with factual data that the best chance they can give their children starts with being married before having children and providing a loving environment to help them grow into confident and capable adults.
We must let them know that they can do anything they want and encourage them that education and taking personal responsibility is not only critical, it is how they become empowered. They must respect themselves and demand respect from others, especially men. The single mother birth rate is alarmingly high and must be reversed, and we should work towards this goal. Women control the future of our nation, because how they care for, teach, and raise their children will impact all aspects of society.
