On March 24, 2010, President Obama signed Executive Order 13535, which prohibits federal funding of abortions except in the case of rape or incest, or if the life of the mother is in danger, “consistent with a longstanding federal statutory restriction that is commonly known as the Hyde Amendment”. While we must acknowledge that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land, the law is on the side of pro-lifers when it comes to the funding of abortions. Abortions at Planned Parenthood have increased every year, while birth control services and other preventative health services and screenings have decreased. In fiscal 2011, American taxpayers funded Planned Parenthood in the amount of $542 million dollars. It performed a total of 333,964 abortions, translating to one every ninety-four seconds. This is an obvious violation of the Hyde Amendment and President Obama’s Executive Order.
Going forward, Congress must assure us that not one cent of our tax money will be used to provide abortions through organizations such as Planned Parenthood. While abortion may be legal, those of us who are pro-life must not be forced to pay for what we believe to be murder. Federal funding of abortion is against the law. Congress must enforce the law.
