Living in Florida I must admit the race for governor in 2014 should prove to be quite interesting. While Republican Governor Rick Scott does not have overwhelming approval from the voters on the job he has done for our state, it does seem overall that things have improved since he took office. Unemployment went down to 6.4% in November 2013, well below the national average of seven percent.
Governor Scott’s biggest challenger is former Governor Charlie Crist, who ran on the Republican ticket and served as governor from 2006 through 2009. He declined to run for a second term as governor. He chose instead to run for the United States Senate in 2010, first as a Republican and then switching and running as an Independent after being beaten out of the primary by Senator Marco Rubio, who went on to win the election in a three way race between Rubio, Crist and Democrat Kendrick Meeks.
As of now, Crist has thrown his hat in the ring choosing to run as a Democrat. There is speculation that Alex Sink will run again as a Democrat. I suppose if she beats Crist in the primary he might decide to run as an Independent again. If this doesn’t prove to be an interesting race I will be surprised.
While I may not agree with everything that Governor Rick Scott has done in Florida, the fact that he repealed the executive orders that Governor Crist signed requiring Florida to adhere to strict climate change regulations and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions makes him the best choice at this point. This alone saved Floridians millions in skyrocketing energy costs which would have resulted from compliance with these executive orders.
If he would only listen to all of the teachers and parents who are speaking out and end Florida’s participation in the Common Core State Standards I would completely support Governor Rick Scott’s re-election to a second term as governor.
Are you listening Governor Scott?
