It is disappointing to see this happen, but during the last legislative session with Democrat majorities in both state houses Colorado passed several new laws which do not represent the interests of those who live in rural Colorado. The new laws require rural electricity cooperatives to double their use of renewable energy sources by 2020. This will drive up the cost of electricity in these rural counties while urban areas are not required to comply with the same law. In addition, new gun control laws and tougher restrictions on oil and gas developers will adversely affect those who live in rural areas. They believe these laws are unfair and are not evenly applied to all of the residents of Colorado. It is hard to blame them for this action. They essentially have no representation in the state legislature. Unfortunately, this may be a precursor to what we may see happening in other states. This push to make it more difficult to live in rural areas is part of a larger plan to consolidate populations into urban areas with higher densities and turning our rural lands into conservation areas off limits to human trespass. It will be interesting to follow and see how this plays out.
