Universal background checks are just another step along the path to universal firearm registration. Time and again we see that illegal gun purchases identified under existing background check laws are rarely prosecuted. Why? If the purpose of these measures were truly to keep guns out of the wrong hands, states would be aggressively pursuing those criminals. But instead, states seek to imply that gun purchasers are guilty until proven innocent. Should we, the law-abiding, have to seek permission to own a firearm? Are we, the law-abiding, willing to walk down that slippery slope toward total firearm registration?
Franklin reminded us that "those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
When we will decide that the price is just too high?
