I watched Marissa Mayer on TV yesterday. She was doing an interview on the Today show regarding this issue. While the concept of working at home is a great one for some businesses, there are just some businesses that need people interacting and having face to face instant, feedback on a daily basis. Obviously, from the interview, she had people "working" from home who were not actually being productive and getting "work" done. She also had no coordination or communication going on between workers. She said there were times when she was on conference calls trying to get feedback from employees and there was an awkward silence on the other end because the other person was actually doing something totally unrelated to the conference call and not even listening. I think there is something to be said for face to face contact. I definitely do not think we do near enough of that today. While I think there are some jobs you can do from home, I don't think every job can be done that way. Obviously, this CEO doesn't feel her company can be run that way anymore and I respect her for making the right decision for her company even though it isn't the popular thing to do.
